Across those 15, the published RTP runs from 93.75% to 97.31%, with a median of 96.29%. That median is the honest middle of what this catalogue offers, and it is the number to hold in your head when a casino advertises “up to 98%”.

Reels: what the count actually changes

A slot’s reels are the vertical strips that spin. The count is the first thing that tells you how a game will behave, and it has barely changed in a century.

Three-reel slots are the original shape — the 1899 Liberty Bell had three reels and one payline. Fewer reels means fewer possible combinations, which means wins land more often but stay small, and the paytable is short enough to read in one go. If you want to understand what a machine is doing before you bet on it, a three-reel game is where to start.

Five-reel slots are the modern default. Two extra reels multiply the possible outcomes enormously, which is what makes room for the features people expect now: free spins, multipliers, expanding wilds, bonus rounds. The trade is variance — you sit through longer dry runs to reach the moments the game is built around.

Beyond five, the reel count stops being the useful description. Games sold as “cluster pays” or “ways to win” drop paylines altogether and pay for groups of touching symbols, so counting reels tells you nothing about how you get paid. Read the paytable instead.

RTP is a long-run average, not a promise

Return to player is the share of all money wagered that a game pays back over millions of spins. A 96% slot does not hand back 96 cents of every euro you put in during your session; it means that across the whole population of players, over an enormous number of spins, the machine keeps about four. Your evening is a rounding error inside that average.

Volatility decides what the session feels like

Two slots can share an RTP of 96% and play nothing alike. Volatility is the difference: a low-volatility game pays small and often, a high-volatility one pays rarely and large. Same average, opposite experience, and very different bankroll requirements.

It is also the honest answer to the question people really ask, which is where the loose slots are. There is no such thing as a machine that is due — there is only a game whose volatility matches how long you want to sit there.
