The banker bet in baccarat would be a winning bet if the casino let you make it for nothing. It wins 45.86% of hands and loses 44.62% — a margin of +1.24% in your favour. The 5% commission the house takes on every winning banker bet is not a service charge or a tradition. It is the precise amount required to turn that positive number negative, and it lands it at −1.06%.
Once you see the commission for what it is, the rest of the table reads very quickly.

The three outcomes, and how often they happen
Baccarat is dealt from an eight-deck shoe, and after the drawing rules run their course the hand ends one of three ways. There is no decision to make: the rules decide whether a third card is drawn, not you.

Ties push both main bets, so if you discard them and look only at hands that actually settle, banker wins 50.68% of the time and player wins 49.32%. That is where the whole game lives: a coin flip, weighted by about two thirds of a percentage point.
The asymmetry is not arbitrary. The banker hand draws its third card after seeing whether the player drew one, and that scrap of extra information is worth exactly those 1.24 points.

Three things are worth pulling out of that table.
The gap between the two main bets is 0.18 percentage points. On €10,000 of turnover that is €18. Anyone who tells you that always betting banker is the key to baccarat is describing a difference smaller than the tip. It is still the correct default, because it is free to take — but it is not a strategy.
The tie bet is priced by its payout, not its name. At 8:1 it is the most expensive bet on the table by a factor of thirteen; at 9:1 it is merely bad. Check which one you are looking at, because both are common and the layout rarely makes it obvious.
“No commission” costs more. Tables that advertise removing the 5% fee usually pay only half on a winning banker hand totalling 6. That single clause moves the banker bet from 1.06% to 1.46% — worse than the player bet you could have made instead. It is the clearest example in the casino of a fee being removed and the price going up.
Why there is no baccarat strategy
Blackjack has decisions. Video poker has decisions. Baccarat has exactly one, made before the cards come out, and after that the drawing rules are mechanical. You cannot play a hand badly. You can only choose a bad bet.
That is why the game has the best house edge of any no-skill game on the floor, and also why the enormous published literature of baccarat “systems” is empty. Every one of them — Martingale, Paroli, 1-3-2-6, and the pattern-following schemes built around the scoreboards — is a rule for varying stake size. Varying your stake changes the size of your bets. It does not change the 1.06%, because the edge is a percentage of whatever you stake, and no sequence of percentages of a fixed number ever sums to zero.
Those scoreboards are a house edge, not a service
Nearly every baccarat table, physical or online, displays the history of recent results — the big road, the bead plate, and the derived roads that plot streaks and alternations in coloured dots.
The shoe has no memory. Each hand is dealt from a shoe whose composition barely shifts, and the probabilities above hold from the first hand to the last. A run of nine bankers tells you precisely nothing about the tenth.
Casinos supply those boards, prominently and for free, because reading patterns into them makes players bet more and bet worse — usually pushing them toward the tie, which is where the 14.36% lives. The boards are not neutral furniture. They are the most profitable decoration in the room, and the same gambler’s fallacy we cover in loose slots.

Only the free odds bet in craps and a well-played blackjack table beat it, and both of those require you to know something. Baccarat asks you to know one word.

A single return figure for “baccarat” would have to average a 1.06% bet, a 1.24% bet and a 14.36% bet into one number describing a player who does not exist. The 1.06% is the smallest thing that can cost you money
Banker at 1.06% is about the lowest house edge you will find anywhere in a casino. On €1,000 of action that is roughly €10.60 expected — the price of a few hours at a table.
Now price the other risk. A single withdrawal that never arrives costs your entire balance, not a percentage of it. Measured against that, the difference between banker and player, or between 1.06% and 1.24%, is rounding error.
Which is why the edge is worth optimising and the custody is worth removing. - Bet banker. Accept the 5% — it is still the best price on the table.

Do that and you are playing baccarat as well as it can be played, which is the unusual charm of the game: there is nothing left to learn, and no one who has learned more than you.
