Gambling is a paid form of entertainment. Over enough time the house edge decides the outcome, which means the money you put in is the price of playing, not an investment with a return. Everything on this page is written on that basis.
When it stops being entertainment
The warning signs are boringly consistent, and none of them are about how much you bet:
- You raise stakes to win back what you already lost.
- You gamble with money set aside for something else.
- You hide how much you play, or how much you have lost.
- You cannot stop while you are ahead, only when the balance is gone.
- You play to escape stress or low mood rather than for fun.
If you recognise two or more of these, the useful next step is not a better strategy. It is a limit or a break.
Limits worth setting before you deposit
Set these while you are calm, not mid-session:
- A deposit limit. Decide the monthly figure first and treat it as spent the moment you deposit it.
- A loss limit per session. Choose the number at which you stop, and stop there even if the next spin feels due. It never is: each spin is independent of the last.
- A time limit. Long sessions cost more than short ones at the same stake, simply because you play more rounds.
- A cooling-off period. Most reputable operators let you lock your account for 24 hours, a week or a month. Use it before you need it.
Self-exclusion at a crypto casino is not what it is at a licensed bookmaker
This is the part most sites leave out. A licensed operator in a regulated market has to honour self-exclusion, and in several countries it is enforced across every licensed operator at once through a national register. A crypto casino that runs without KYC has no identity to exclude: you can open another account, or connect another wallet, in under a minute. Self-custody makes that easier, not harder.
So if you decide to stop, do not rely on the casino to stop you. Block it at the device instead, with software such as Gamban or the free BetBlocker, which cover thousands of gambling sites and apps on every device you install them on.
Free, confidential help
You do not need to have a diagnosis, a debt, or a plan before you talk to someone. These services are free, independent of any operator, and available whether or not you decide to stop:
- BeGambleAware — advice and a 24-hour helpline.
- GamCare — free treatment and support in the UK.
- Gambling Therapy — multilingual online support, worldwide.
- Gamblers Anonymous — peer meetings, in person and online.
If you are worried about someone else, all four also support family and friends.
Keeping minors out
Gambling is for adults only: 18 or older, and higher in some places. If you share a device, use the parental controls built into your operating system, and consider installing BetBlocker on the devices children use. It is free and takes a minute.
What we do here
We earn affiliate commission from some of the casinos we review, and we say so on every review. That does not change how we work:
- We never tell readers a game is due to pay, or that a system beats the house edge. Nothing does.
- We publish the wagering requirement next to every bonus we mention, because the requirement is the offer.
- We leave a field empty when we could not verify it, rather than filling it with a guess.
